150 years since birth of
Ferdinand Porsche

Silver medal

A native of Vratislavice nad Nisou and the world's most famous automotive designer and engineer Ferdinand Porsche (1875 - 1951) celebrates the anniversary of his birth.

Among his most famous designs is undoubtedly the legendary Volkswagen Beetle, which became a global phenomenon. Alongside this design, it is also worth mentioning the largest and heaviest tank of all time, simply called the Maus.

Ferdinand Porsche (1875–1951), world-renowned automobile designer, was born in Vratislavice nad Nisou.

In his youth, he was a passionate self-taught electrical engineer. At the age of 15, the young Porsche shocked those around him by electrifying his family home with a generator he had built himself, where he also installed an electric doorbell.

His fondness for experimenting with new technologies was most evident at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when he collaborated with Lohner on the first electric cars and hybrids. In 1930, he founded his own design office and subsequently designed his most famous creation, the Volkswagen Beetle.

During World War II, he participated in military projects, which at that time took precedence over the production of civilian automobiles. It was during this period that one of the most feared tanks in the world, the Maus, was created.

Ferdinand Porsche himself died in 1951 at the age of 75 following a stroke. Thus, a man whose name became synonymous with speed and innovation emerged from his native Vratislavice.
